The jobs headline misses an important question: is the work good?
The ILO’s Employment and Social Trends 2026 report highlights job-quality challenges alongside relatively stable headline employment.
Having a job and having secure, adequately paid work are different measures. Hours, predictability, benefits and opportunities to progress all influence the economic value of employment. A national unemployment rate cannot capture every dimension, especially for people working fewer hours than they want.
Compare an offer in full
Write down expected hours, scheduling arrangements, travel costs and the basis on which pay is calculated. Clarify whether headline earnings assume overtime or performance targets. Two offers with similar annual figures may leave very different amounts of usable income and personal time.
Read surveys with care
Employment reports may use different age ranges and definitions. Participation can change even when unemployment barely moves. Look for the technical notes and avoid assuming a global trend applies to every occupation. For a job search, local vacancies and written terms provide a more direct guide than a broad international average.
